Here’s everything Apple showed at WWDC 2022

Apple’s summer presentation has just ended, where Cook and the company presented the next updates of the current operating systems.

We hope that the developers’ conference is held online for the last time, and the next presentations will be held live with guests, journalists and a bunch of “emcees”.

We tried to guess what Cupertino will show based on rumors, leaks and leaks from different sources. Some predictions turned out to be quite accurate, while others completely failed to come true.

As always, it all started with a beautiful introductory video with footage from the Apple campus and Tim Cook’s keynote speech.

The head of the company talked about how Apple helps developers, app creators, and enthusiasts who create content for various Apple platforms. According to Cook, there are already more than 30 million registered developers worldwide.

iOS 16 with a new lock screen and redesigned notifications

As always, we started with the mobile operating system for the iPhone.

▪ The first change was the redesigned lock screen with the largest number of innovations in iOS history. Finally there are customizable blocks, information indicators and even a changeable font for the on-screen clock.

▪ The second change is new notifications and banners on the lock screen. These will be flexibly customizable, and third-party developers will be able to add their own blocks.

▪ Expectedly, the Focus mode has been pumped up. It got new appearance settings and a variety of profiles.

▪ Next in line for new features is the Messages app. It is now possible to edit iMessage messages, cancel the sending of erroneous messages, and mark correspondence as unread.

SharePlay

▪ The “coronavirus” feature SharePlay was further developed. Now you can use different modes of shared content consumption in the iMessage application as well.

▪ Dictation mode got some new features. The system now automatically switches from typing with the keyboard to voice input. It will be curious to see which iPhone models get this option.

▪ The mobile operating system got the ability to recognize text from videos with an update to last year’s Live Text option. Most likely, the Russian language will never be added.

▪ Changes for the Wallet app can be skipped right away, because they are unlikely to reach us anytime soon. In case you’re wondering, they added sharing electronic keys, accepting payments with the iPhone (even with NFC-cards) and a few new features for customers of American banks.

▪ Another minor update not for our region is the Maps app update. Several countries and cities got detailed maps, navigation elements, and three-dimensional objects of significant buildings. They promise to add support for transport maps and route construction with stops.

▪ Continuing the theme of far-flung features, they told us about the News app. The application received a summary of sports events and learned to display the results of matches on the lock screen. Of course, the option will only work in the U.S.

▪ Much more interesting seem the new Family Access options. Much attention was paid to children’s accounts, requests for the purchase of content and automatic expansion of the account when children grow up.

▪ The iCloud cloud storage will have a special family library for better cataloging and storage of the family archive.

My Home

▪ The Home app for managing smart gadgets has been pumped up a bit. Support appeared for the developing Matter standard, which may become unified for manufacturers of smart electronics in the near future.

The app’s appearance has finally changed a bit. We got sorting devices by room and category, a faster and more convenient camera view, and the ability to display the necessary indicators of the house on the lock screen.

▪ They also talked about the long-forgotten CarPlay. The system has been seriously reworked and taught to manage different elements of the car. It is possible to display various indicators of the car, change parameters of systems and fully use big multimedia screens in the car.

Unfortunately, the first feeling was wrong and the changed lock screen became the main feature of iOS 16.

WatchOS 9 with sleep phase tracking and new watch faces

The second novelty presented was the operating system for the Apple Watch.

▪ The developers have added several new watch faces, including a lunar calendar, astronomical map and children’s.

▪ Running workouts are now better tracked and monitored. New algorithms will more accurately record all of the user’s movements.

▪ For competition lovers, there is now a challenge mode with other users of the gadget.

▪ It is now finally possible to track the user’s sleep phases, just enough battery power to last until morning. The watch will collect a lot of statistics and transfer them to the Health app. Of course, in the U.S., the data can be shared with a personal doctor.

▪ The wearable gadget will be able to monitor the heart rate more accurately and anticipate possible problems and abnormalities. New algorithms will try to detect arrhythmias and inform the user about the deterioration of their condition.

▪ After the update, it will be possible to keep track of medications taken. Third-party apps will no longer be needed for this.

Even more powerful and cooler Apple M2 processor

After a couple of software innovations presented a new processor. It was the ARM chip of the second generation Apple M2.

The new processor is slightly larger than its predecessor, but is much more energy efficient. The chip has 20% more transistors (compared to the regular Apple M1), has a data throughput of 100 GB per second and consists of four efficient and four power efficient cores.

The chip supports up to 24GB of shared memory and has 10 GPU cores.

The real performance of the processor compared to its predecessor will be known after the first tests.

Upgraded MacBook Air 13.6″ with MagSafe and the M2 chip

As expected, after the story about the processor, the first computer running it was also shown. It was the seriously redesigned and improved MacBook Air 2022.

The new computer received an updated 13.6-inch Liquid Retina screen, which is 25% brighter than the display of the previous generation of laptops and has the usual “bangs”.

▪ The notebook’s front camera has been slightly improved, increasing the viewing angle of the lens.

▪ The notebook has a place for 4 speakers with spatial audio support. And the developers returned the magnetic connector for charging.

▪ The performance of the new notebook will be about 38% higher than its predecessor. Of course, this is achieved by the new M2 chip. It won’t have an active cooling system, by the way.

▪ Up to 18 hours of video playback time are promised.

The MacBook Air 2022 will come with a new charger with a pair of Type-C ports, and the computer itself will get support for fast charging from this adapter.

In the U.S. the notebook will cost $ 1,199. The model will be available from July 2022. We are waiting in Russia with a delay and a serious markup.

Updated MacBook Pro on the M2 chip with Touch Bar

The second computer with the new chip inside was a 13-inch MacBook Pro. It is interesting that the update was given to the basic “pro”, and more advanced 14-inch and 16-inch models will continue to be sold with the first generation processor inside.

The updated laptop will continue to be produced in the old design with the Touch Bar, which is becoming a thing of the past. It’s a questionable decision to update such a model.

Developers promise up to 20 hours of video playback and support for all the chips of the new M2 chip.

In the U.S. the updated 13-inch MacBook Pro will cost $ 1299. When the computer will get to Russia – is unknown.

MacOS Ventura with a new windowing mode and improved game support

After a couple of “hardware” returned to updating the software. On the turn of the desktop operating system.

▪ Developers added Stage Manager application management mode, which allows you to focus better on the current application and move to other programs faster.

Rocked the built-in Spotlight search, which added Live Text mode for recognizing data in photos or videos.

The Mail app got the ability to undo emails and scheduled mailings.

As always, the standard Safari browser has been accelerated, making it even less processor-intensive when running.

Passkeys password management system appeared, which should become a replacement for Face ID or Touch ID authorization.

Apple is finally thinking seriously about gameplay on the Mac. The power and performance of the new chips makes it quite possible. With Metal 3 you can create games for Apple computers with quite acceptable graphics and good physics.

Let’s hope that the major developers will pay attention to macOS and we will see a lot of high quality game projects for Mac.

▪ Continuity mode has been upgraded, which has become even cooler and more convenient. Now you can quickly switch FaceTime calls from iPhone to Mac or iPad.

▪ The iPhone camera can finally be used for video calls from your Mac without third-party apps or crutches. This is why the Cupertinians were so reluctant to improve the front end in their computers.

iPadOS 16 with multi-window and collaborative document editing

The next software innovation was an updated system for Apple tablets.

▪ A new Collaboration mode for collaborative work on documents in iPad appeared. It can be initiated directly from the iMessage chat and then work together with the team on the same project.

This option will be systemic and will not be tied to a specific application. APIs will be made available to third-party developers, allowing the Collaboration mode to be embedded in any utility where there is a need for it.

▪ The new Free Form system will allow multiple users to work together in a FaceTime group call. It will be supported on iPhones, iPads, and Macs. Immediately stipulated that the option will appear later this year.

▪ Gaming chips and features are promised to carry over from macOS. Of course, because the tablets also have Apple’s ARM chips with Metal 3 support.

▪ The Game Center application with support of profiles of different users is pumped up to expand the gaming possibilities.

▪ In some standard applications, they promise to add various small settings, similar to macOS. This is another step in the convergence of the two systems.

▪ The new Stage Manager mode from macOS will also appear on the iPad. It’s practically free window management on the Apple tablet.

At this point, almost two hours of an extensive Apple presentation came to an end. We are waiting for you in the comments to discuss all the new features.
