Best soundbar for projector

How do you imagine a home theater? A big TV, a receiver, multichannel speakers… Something expensive and bulky, with lots of wires and complicated connections? Not necessarily!

The modern moviegoer can be satisfied with a couple of comparatively small devices – a projector and a soundbar, connected by one cable, or without any cable at all. Such home theater is mobile enough – it is easy to direct it to another wall or move it to another room or location. The projector can even be fully portable, which allows you to arrange a movie show anywhere – in the park, on the roof or in the country – the main thing is to have a surface on which you can project the picture (preferably on a special screen or other perfectly flat white background).

Why choose a projector rather than a TV?

  • Just like in a real movie theater – because there the picture is also shown by projectors.
  • With a projector, you can get a huge screen for a fraction of the price of an appropriately sized TV.
  • Vision Concern. Many agree that because of the larger screen size and lower overall brightness compared to a TV, projectors provide more comfortable viewing and less eye fatigue.
  • Compact, easy to move around.

Do projectors have disadvantages? Rather, there are peculiarities. First, the light: you need perfect darkness for the highest quality and contrast images. Therefore, if your home cinema room has windows, it is better to take care of thick curtains or blinds. Secondly, projector lamps have a limited lifespan and need to be replaced periodically. Until recently, most projectors had xenon or mercury lamps with a few thousand hours life – about one year of active use. However, now more economical and durable LED lamps with a lifespan of tens of thousands of hours have become widespread, which will allow you not to worry about replacement for many years.

Why should you choose a soundbar rather than a speaker system?

We won’t say that a soundbar is better than a classic speaker system, but this young class of devices has a number of advantages. Soundbars are more compact and cheaper than multi-channel speakers, easier to install and do not require additional devices (amplifier, receiver). At the same time on the market you can find both stereo and various multi-channel variations, including models with speakers directed into the ceiling to create immersive Dolby Atmos sound.

Mini-setup: portable projector + stereo soundbar

Budget-friendly, but high-quality, super-compact, and half-portable. Budget option for small rooms or mobile theater.

Anker Nebula Apollo

Nebula Apollo is a miniature handheld projector capable of delivering quality and vivid images up to 100″. It supports wired (USB and HDMI) and wireless (Wi-Fi and Bluetooth) connection, so you can use it with any source – PC, game consoles, Blu-ray player, smartphone or USB flash drive. In addition, the projector is equipped with Android 7.1, which means it can be used without additional devices for direct streaming of content using the applications available on Google Play.

To control Apollo you can use the supplied remote control, Nebula Connect app for your smartphone or the full-fledged touchpad on the top panel of the projector. On the bottom there is a jack for tripod mounting. The Apollo has enough battery for 4 hours of video playback or 30 hours of Bluetooth speaker mode. Yes, there’s built-in audio to help with offsite viewing, but for the home, we recommend connecting a wireless soundbar to the projector for a fuller theatrical experience.

  • Brightness: 200 ANSI-lumen
  • Resolution: 854×480 (16:9)
  • Projection size: 20-100″ (100″ at 3.08m)
  • Battery life: 4 hours video (up to 30 hours in Bluetooth speaker mode)
  • Built-in speaker: 6W
  • Connections: HDMI (1.4 to 1080p), USB, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Screen Mirroring

Anker Soundcore Infini Mini

A compact and inexpensive 2-channel soundbar with impressive sound for its price and size. Like the Apollo projector, great for a small room or where space is tight. The soundbar can be connected to Apollo via Bluetooth or wire (3.5mm or optics).
Don’t be intimidated by the older version of Bluetooth 2.1 EDR – the new standards improve not the sound, but the power consumption and range of the devices. Since the Soundcore Infini Mini gets its power from the mains and is able to amplify the signal more efficiently than portable gadgets, it doesn’t really matter. Can be mounted on the wall (special anchors included).

  • Connection: 3.5mm, optical (Toslink), Bluetooth 2.1 EDR
  • 2 drivers x 20W + bass port
  • Modes: Music and Movie
  • Control: button or remote control
  • Weight: 1.2kg

Maxi-setup: 4K projector + soundbar with Dolby Atmos

The next option for those who want access to the latest standards and technology – 4K high-definition video with HDR10 and Dolby Atmos surround sound.

Anker Nebula Cosmos Max 4K

The projector has a spacey design with an oval aluminum body decorated with a diode “starry sky” on the top panel – nice, but there is no touchpad for control like the Apollo. There is also no battery for portable use. Otherwise, the Cosmos Max has all the same features as its portable counterpart, but with improved characteristics: the picture is bigger, the resolution and brightness are higher, there is automatic focus, support for Chromecast has been added, and the OS is Android TV 9.0.

For a projector, the Nebula Cosmos Max has very good built-in sound – four 10-watt speakers with 360-degree sound and Dolby Audio support. But the picture it produces is worthy of much more. And Anker has the right companion for this projector.

  • Brightness: 1500 ANSI-lumen (4500 lumens)
  • Resolution: 3840×2160 (16:9, 4K UHD, HDR10)
  • Projection size: 60″ to 150″ (150″ at 3.98m)
  • Battery life: 4 hours of video (up to 30 hours in Bluetooth speaker mode)
  • Built-in Speakers: 4 x 10W
  • Connections: 2 x HDMI, USB, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Chromecast
  • Focus: Automatic

Anker Soundcore Infini Pro

The older model in the lineup supports Dolby Atmos surround sound technology, and HDMI and HDMI ARC are added to the connectivity options. The six speakers are amplified with 120 watts of power and achieve a sound pressure of 105 dB.

The Infini Pro’s 2.1-channel design combines a pair of front mounted 2.5″ mid-range tweeters and a pair of 1″ tweeters with two upward facing 3″ integrated subwoofers, complete with symmetrical phase-inverter ports and exclusive BassUp technology. Really powerful bass without a separate subwoofer will fill your room along with Dolby Atmos surround sound. At the same time, the soundbar is quite compact – it is less than one meter long and only six centimeters high. Thin and elegant body of the soundbar is covered with high-quality and wear-resistant acoustic fabric.

  • Connection: HDMI, HDMI ARC, 3.5mm, optical (Toslink), Bluetooth 5.0
  • 2 x 1″ tweeters, 2 x 2.5″ tweeters, 2 x 3″ subwoofer, upward facing and symmetrical bass ports
  • Power output: 40 watts
  • BassUp technology for bass boost
  • Modes: Movie, Music, Voice
  • Controls: Buttons, remote control, Soundcore app
  • Weight: 3.3kg

Sonos Ray compact wireless soundbar

Enjoy great stereo sound quality with the Sonos Ray soundbar, enhancing and accentuating your home TV soundtrack. The Sonos Ray will deliver clearer vocals and powerful bass with an understated design that fits perfectly in the room.

  • Clear dialogue with speech enhancement
  • Forward-facing speakers for versatile installation
  • Easy optical connection to your TV (cable included)
  • Compatible with Sonos app, Airplay 2 and Spotify Connect
  • Trueplay Tuning for fine-tuning EQ to suit your unique room
  • Extension to Dolby Digital Surround Sound System when paired with two Sonos One SLs.

Want to increase the volume and sound quality of your TV? The Sonos Ray sound bar is the perfect solution for a small room or even just to enhance your TV’s vocal range. You won’t get full Dolby Atmos performance like the Sonos Beam Gen 2 or Arc, but the Sonos Ray is capable of handling Dolby Digital surround sound, with vocals, mids and lows split between two Ray tweeters and two midrange speakers.
With a simple optical connection to your TV (cable included), your Sonos Ray will skillfully handle both standard stereo and Dolby Digital sound.

Like other Sonos products before it, the Sonos Ray can be used to wirelessly stream music as well as play audio from your TV. Using the Sonos app, you can access your favorite streaming services, digital radio stations, podcasts, and more simply by linking your account to the appropriate service.
Sonos Ray doesn’t have a built-in voice assistant, but you can use Amazon or Google’s voice assistant to control your Sonos Ray if you have one in the same room. Sonos is compatible with the broader Alexa or Google Assistant ecosystem in the home.

If you’re looking to build a surround sound system over time, you’ll be pleased to know that you can add a Sonos subwoofer and/or a pair of rear surround systems (such as the Sonos One SL) to the Sonos Ray over time.
With a pair of tweeter and midrange speakers, the Sonos Ray is capable of delivering great Dolby Digital Surround sound. An optional subwoofer and/or rear speakers are great options for upgrading your home theater system.

Taking a simplistic approach, the Sonos Ray has a sleek polycarbonate grille and a reinforced plastic enclosure to protect internal components. Like other soundbars in the line, the Sonos Ray has a number of touch controls on top that allow you to skip/repeat, play/pause, and adjust volume. The inputs for the optical connection, power cable, and optional Ethernet connection are located on the back of the soundbar and are hidden from view.
The Sonos Ray uses only front-facing speakers, which means that, unlike the Beam and Arc, it can be fully recessed into a media unit or shelf without interfering with side or upward facing speakers. This makes it ideal for a small room, as the Ray can be tucked away to the side without taking away from the performance.

Comparing Sonos soundbars

  • The Sonos Ray is Sonos’ most compact soundbar, offering Dolby Digital sound thanks to a four-speaker acoustic design. Connects to your TV through the optical input
  • Sonos Beam – The Beam uses five speakers, including side drivers, to simulate Dolby Atmos sound as well as Dolby Digital. Ideal for a medium-sized room
  • Sonos Arc – Sonos’ flagship soundboard uses 11 speakers, including 2 pointing upwards, that deliver true Dolby Atmos sound – ideal for a large room or stand-alone theater.
